Obituary for Roy Hayden Stevenson

Roy Hayden Stevenson
Mr. Roy “Corky” Hayden Stevenson, resident of Hickory Ridge, Arkansas, departed this life on Friday, October 13, 2017, at Crestpark Nursing Home in Wynne, Arkansas, at the age of 90. He was born in Hatfield, Indiana on Tuesday, July 5, 1927, the son of Franklin Stevenson and Bessie (Hines) Stevenson-Ray.

Roy enlisted in the United States Navy at the age of 16 with only an eighth grade education. He served as a Fireman First Class on the USS DuPage in the Pacific Theater during World War II, and was exceedingly proud of serving his country. Following the war, on December 12, 1948, he and Patty (Teague) Stevenson were united in marriage.

Corky was a member and former deacon of the Hickory Ridge Church of Christ. He loved his church family, and was hugely involved with church activities from teaching Sunday School to preaching. He was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and for a time he served on the Board of Directors for the Cross County Farmer’s Association.

Roy accomplished many things in life with little formal education. He was a farmer, mechanic, artist of oil paint and wood, furniture builder, carpenter, and engineered many of his own farm implements. He enjoyed golf, hunting, flying, and playing cards and dominoes. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather, and will be missed by many.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Terry Stevenson; a daughter, Melanie Stevenson; a brother, Bill Stevenson; and two step-brothers, Johnny Ray and Charles Ray.

Mr. Stevenson is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Patty Stevenson of the home; a son, Dennis Stevenson and wife, Kathy, of Hickory Ridge, Arkansas; two daughters, Karen Gilmore of Hickory Ridge, Arkansas and Melinda Hogan and husband, Doyle, of Hickory Ridge, Arkansas; a daughter-in-law, Judith Stevenson of Jonesboro, Arkansas; nine grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 17, 2017, at the Hickory Ridge Church of Christ with Mr. Larry McFadden officiating. Interment will follow in Lewis Cemetery in Hickory Ridge, Arkansas.

Friends may visit at the church from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, October 16, 2017.

Those honored to serve as pallbearers are Michael Stevenson, Matthew Stevenson, Travis Barnes, John McFarland, Zach Gilmore, David Stevenson, Gunter Stevenson, and Ian Gilmore.

Donations may be made in Roy’s honor to the Hickory Ridge Church of Christ or to Children’s Homes, Inc. of Paragould.
